The Rich History Of Langebaan

holiday destination in south africa

A holiday destination in South Africa – Langebaan Lagoon was formed by the rising and falling of sea levels during pre-historic times. This is unlike most lagoons which form where freshwater rivers enter the sea. As a result, Langebaan Lagoon is purely a saltwater lagoon.

This “not so little anymore” town is the oldest town in South Africa with a history dating back more than 400 years ago. Khoi tribes, including the Hottentots, Bushmen, and the Strandlopers who are now known as the Khoisan, inhabited the West Coast area. This is where the inspiration for “Khoisands Lodge” came from. A name which depicts history and nativity to the land of Langebaan.

Aside from having a really rich history, there is an endless amount of things to do in this town.

Water Sports

The white sand beaches surrounding the clear waters of the Langebaan Lagoon are one of the main attractions of Langebaan. Food For Thought

If you are a seafood fan, Die Strandloper should be at the top of your list with a 10-course seafood meal on the beach. Huddled around a braai area where each meal is prepared before your eyes, guests are encouraged to take photos and interact with the chefs. There are lots of nice little restaurants and bars just off the beach. There is one nightclub in town, called Flamingo’s (which is a five-minute drive from the lagoon) and a bar with live music on certain days of the week. There are plenty of other activities in the area, such as windsurfing, kayaking, pilates, yoga lessons, and within a reasonable distance, a Gary Player signature golf course, horse riding, fishing, sightseeing in the wine-lands and Cape Town is just more than 100km’s away.
